In May 2006 freelance Irish reporter Liam Horan and I accompanied the Irish aid agency GOAL on a brief assignment in Sudan to report on GOALís work in Sudan and Darfur.
Due to the civil unrest in the North Darfur area our movements were restricted severely. We didnít get beyond Kutum village and the project almost came to a halt while we were there. Late in 2006, GOAL finally pulled out of Darfur.
Despite our limited access, we could see the vital role that GOAL played in an area where hundreds of people are displaced from their homes every day.
Setting up clinics wherever possible, supplying vital nutrition and medical supplies and nursing practices Ė and teaching the people of Sudan how to aim for greater self-sufficiency.
